UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US vs. METAL: A HEADBANGER'S JOURNEY vs.VICE'S: TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL. I'm sure there is plenty of information on the internets about what ACTUALLY happens in these films, followed by reviews and critiques that include lines such as "The genesis of this widely publicized and often referenced genre was by far the most enjoyable aspect..." Therefore, this review will take a more relaxed approach to content.
Round One: Mayhem Content
This one goes to Until the Light takes Us – hands down – with 31% more mayhem than the other two combined! The Varg interviews tend to overshadow Mayhem as a whole, but they are pretty interesting and a must watch if you are thinking about producing a Casio Tone metal project from prison. Special mention goes to Metal: A Headbangers Journey for the drunken Necrobutcher interview, however, points were NOT awarded due to Necro being the lamest of the original members.
Round Two: Hipster Content
This round is like golf, lower scores are better. Metal: A Headbangers Journey takes the vintage denim cake! Although Metal lacks the most black metal content, it was in fact made by a REAL metal head: Sam Dunn. Until The Light Takes Us is co-written by noise-rock hipster extraordinaire Aaron Aites (former member of Iran with Kyp Malone from TV on the Radio) and Vice's True Norwegian Black Metal is...well... done by Vice.
Round Three: Narration/Lead
Until someone realizes that David Attenborough or Saruman should be used to narrate absolutely anything and everything, this round goes to Until The Light Takes Us. The movie essentially revolves around Darkthrone's Fenriz who speaks early on about his unwavering dedication to black metal music, not-ideology and portrays true metal head that one can not help but want to spoon under upside-down crucifix.
