OCCVLTA INTERVIEW

On vous a déjà parler d'eux précédemment, le groupe allemand trash/doom/ black metal Occvlta est un des groupes sans album complet que nous sommes obsédés par. Tous ce qu'Ils ont est un démo jamais releasé au Canada sous le titre We command the Wolves et 2 tounes sur Thuringian Supremacy Vol. 1. Pour les habitués du Jour du Sabbat: On vous casse les oreilles avec ça à toutes les semaines! Ça fait parti de la beauté d'internet, merci Fenriz. On daydreamait un peu a avoir une entrevue avec eux et on se disait qu'ils seraient peut-être trop occupé pour nous répondre et qu'on était peut-être un peu trop ambitieux sur qui nous aimerions interviewé, Hey bien non, ils ont été assez gentils pour nous accorder cette ridicule et exclusive entrevue. En espérant une tournée qui passera par Montréal en 2012. ENJOY
 

We have read a few of the interviews we could find online ,they are pretty complete and features most of the info’s regarding the band so lets talk about some other stuff .

-Judging by your band name ,you must have read a lot about occultism ,what appeals you in it ?

Hord: No, we are not really into occultism. More into horror. The simple story is that the band name is an homage to Abbath Doom Occulta. But, what I like about the idea of occultism is, that it tries to explain the things you can not understand. And I am happy there are still things in the world, in our subconscious, and in our dreams we don't understand, and in a way that is also what Occvlta is about. The darkness we all bear inside, and don't understand.

-JDS recently wrote about the documentary “The Occult Experience.”  Do you have a favorite particular Occult film or documentary?

Hord: Never heard of JDS nor that doc, but I will google that. Thanks for the tip! Häxan from sweden is a great vintage doc. A particular occult film? Dunno, I admire the Seventh Seal and Holy Mountain

-Have you seen the movie Inglorious Bastards ? How do you feel about the concept of rewriting the past ? What was people’s reaction in Germany ?

Hord: Yea, I've seen it, but I can't really talk about the peoples reaction in Germany, cuz I don't watch a lot of TV, and don't read the news, but it was pretty big, and as far as I know everybody loved the austrian SS actor most. It was shot at Babelsberg Studios (where they also produced Das Boot and Metropolis) which is around the corner from where I study, and they are very proud of that production.

To me the old vintage stuff was always much more appealing then the newest shit out there. I buy most of my clothes second hand, also furniture, etc. I like things with a soul, things that tell a story. This media created newest best loudest fastest most detailed most colorful most unique hype bullshit just makes me so fucking sick. But rewriting the past? Hmm? It's not our concept, to make everything like celtic frost on morbid tales, we just do what we love. It's a simple fact that there is only a handful of classic acts, and not every year a new one will come out. We try to catch their spirit, because it gives us such an intense satisfaction, or how the german Ablaze wrote, we play our songs, and feel like Darkthrone, haha!

-When i was in south Germany ,someone made me drink a mixture of beer ,Jager and coca-cola. I don't remember much from that evening but i think they called it ‘’snake bite’’ . Can you confirm that ?

Torm:  I´ve never heard of snake bite yet. But sometimes Jägermeister is a great booze. Mixed with cola AND/OR beer its terrible. Drink it pure while hunting out in the green. You're canadian, you should know how it works, haha!

Hord: I was never into Jägermeister, which is distilled 30 kilometers from where we grew up, and it was the first jersey sponsor of a german football team, btw, and mixing Beer with Coke is an act of intense mental disorientation only performed by teenage retards with no class, and women.

-Kraftwerk is probably the most well known music act that came out of Germany, they had a very strong image and intense band discipline .

Do you relate to them in any ways?

Hord: In no way. Kraftwerk was never important to us. It is too brainy, our music comes from the guts. I like their covers, and I recently heard a very early track with heavy electric guitars, that was nice, but the Autobahn & Tour de France stuff is lightyears away from what we try to express with Occvlta. So what the funky fuck did inspire you to ask us about our relation to Kraftwerk?

-What’s the ONE discovery that in your opinion completely changed the course of humanity ?

Torm: Mc Donalds and electric guitars.

Hord: After such a stupid answer I can't come up with something serious. 

-I have read that you (Torm) were into ‘’garage rock’’ .Ever heard of Montreal’s  The Spaceshits, The Sexareenos or CPC Gangbang ?

Hord: It's me who is/was into garage punk/rock. Some years ago I bought every second record that came out, and now I'm bored of most of it.

Yes, I know these bands, King Khan lives in my neighborhood. He joined Demons Claws (from Montreal?) at a Berlin show, and pissed all over the drums, and when he hit the skins that caused a beautiful acid rain. And I love BBQ. Great singer.

-Have you ever been really scared about something or some place ?

Hord: Swimming in lakes scares me, because I use to think something could grab my feet, though I know there is nothing there, which is the reason I swim in lakes, haha. But somehow it really scares me.

-In your Interview with Vice you said that Robes (along with dragons and cowboy hats) are not black metal.  With all the Occult references that you use how can you NOT accept robes in your music?

Torm: They translated that wrong. Frost was wearing a robe during the Mother North video, so of course robes are black metal! I said leather coats are not black metal. But it's totally stupid, and boring to speak about what is true and what is not.

Hord: The occult references are just stereotypes we use to create a certain atmosphere, like rappers use bling bling. Leather coats would create an atmosphere of the inside of the wardrobe of a 16 years old Dimmu Borgir fan. When we started we thought about wearing robes on stage.

-When I was in Berlin (2007), I noticed a very overt punk and indie scene, however I was told by some metal heads that I need leave Berlin and go to Hamburg to see decent Metal.  Is this the true, or are there good metal Venues in Berlin?  If so, what are they?

Hord: True. Compared to the Punk, Electronic, Indie & Rap scene Metal is not existent in Berlin. Shame on what became of the Prussians, haha! There is a few bars like the Blackland (where I have never been), and the only real underground metal record shop had to quit after a short time because he sold Burzum records, and the Antifa didn't like that, or some shit like that. Johanna of Death from Berlin Booking is the only person who is putting up real quality shows. She also runs two clubs called Kill 'Em All and Masters of Death. But I don't go out a lot anyway, I was never really interested in Berlin's scene.

-You sing in English, which is obviously the language choice to be understood worldwide.  However, Black Metals roots are European and so is much of it’s lyrical content.  Would you consider singing in German?  Or is this reserved for Neue Deutsch Härte bands (such as Rammstein, Megaherz)?

Hord: Megaherz? Haha, what the fuck is that? Neue Deutsche Härte is a term I hear for the first time today.

First of all Occvlta is a rock'n'roll band, and the language of that is english, so it just feels right. I wrote some german lyrics, but it feels too theatric and unnatural, and it always reminds me of Rammstein and Eisregen, and that doesn't make me feel comfortable. When we played Freezing Moon the first time, I immediately sang english with a balcan dialect, haha! Pretender!

I don't think the lyrical content of black metal is european. Satan is universal. Norwegians just had the balls to mix that with patriotism. I bet they started to do that because they wanted to piss people off, because english was the death metal language in the eighties, and they didn't want that.

-Your debut tape ‘’We Command The Wolves’’ is sold out since a while. Any chance of reissuing it here in North America ?

Torm: No, we try not to do things twice.

-Where is the winter ?

Torm: It´s July and the temperature is about 9°C. Where is the summer?

-What's the question you wish someone ask you in an interview?

Torm: The question what question i wish to be asked in an interview. Thanx, very kind of you, haha.

Hord: Again, I must admit that I am struck with dumbness by the terrible adolescent humor of my younger brother. 

-Rambo or Rocky ? 

Torm: Rambo, of course! Rocky is a sportsman. 

Hord: Stallone is always crap.

-German grandma trick for hangovers ?

Torm: Haha, today I can say: I am totally resistant to hangovers.

Hord: A good grandma would tell you that a hangover is always something to be proud of!

-Favourite monster ?

Torm: The mother of my ex-girlfriend, haha. 

Hord: The lake thing.

-Musical guilty pleasure ?

Torm: Michael Jackson's Earth Song, haha.

Hord: Britney Spears - Forgot the name, the one with Timberlake.

-Most pretentious metal act ?

Torm: Lars Ulrich

Hord: Metallica

-Best German Beer ?

Torm: I am not very much into beer in these days. But when you get it fresh out of the tap, every german beer is just like an angel's kiss.

Hord: A cool can of Wolters.

-Best drum sound on an album ?

Torm: Because of our upcoming recordings I´ve recently asked myself. I love the tom tom thunder on Under a funeral moon. Nekromantheon's Divinity of Death sounds like old Kreator regarding the drum sound - it's also great. You can see, it depends on the genre. To death or thrash metal fits a dryer sound, black metal deserves a sound with a lot of delay or reverb.

Hord: I like the sound on Tangorodrim's Unholy and Unlimited. Very nice!
