First a quick disclaimer: I have a soft spot for grindcore and a general dislike for death metal.
The fine folks at Orchard Hill (Death) hooked a brother up with this show, which for me was a first at seeing and hearing all of these bands. Cephalic Carnage was boasted to me that they would nourish my grindcore needs and the show definitely did deliver. They songs were brutal and fast, and the stage presence of front man Lenzig Leal gave the band a great live feel. There were mumblings in the crowd about the current vs. past lineups and perhaps it did not meet the needs of grindheads who actually care about that shit, but I had a good time and have added Cephalic Carnage to my workout playlist.
Macabre, in short, was not for me, however was extremely popular amongst the rest of the crowd. Simply put it was just too cheesy for me. I'm not sure why, they meet plenty of criteria I love. They have overalls and a general southern hick attitude look (Les Claypool is my Jesus), they go into great detail to research and explain the brutal concepts for their songs (a similar approach is taken by my current grindcore band) and the style of metal is one I can generally at LEAST get into when heard live. So, even though I wasn't feeling it that July night, I will say that you should check them out as people who dig them, DIG them and I have a feeling that if I was to hear them again, I would slowly come around.
Finally, Exhumed (Please refer to my disclaimer about my dislike for Death Metal). I can sum up their set with a quote from that night by former Death manager Eric Grief, “Now THIS is fucking death metal!” Right you are Eric, right you are. These guys ripped my ears clean off, they were not only amazingly tight, but the riffs and vocals were solid and original, something that I find is generally lacking from death metal bands these days. The set was good enough to renew my faith in the genre and I suggest that aspiring death bands need not look further than Exhumed for an explanation on what a death metal should be.
All and all an awesome show. Here are some tunes to scope.
